I am a huge proponent of making development apart of your domaining strategy and of course with that you have to stay organized. I for one am typically a terrible organizer. Once my ADD kicks in, I start working on 3-5 projects all at the same time. Furthermore, I have several projects where I work with others on. It became evident that I needed to find something that would allow me to organize my thoughts and allow for collaboration.
There is corporate file sharing and collaboration software available, but its not only overkill, it’s way too expensive. One of my associates recommended I try Basecamp by 37 Signals. I usually avoid nickel and diming services, but the $24 monthly fee is well worth it (FREEUP takes off $10 for your first month). So I started using it and it has allowed me to create messages that other users can comment on, upload files, create writeboards (this is my favorite, can’t tell you how many times I forget a piece of info that gets logged here). Additionally, I believe one of the most useful tools is the to-do lists. User’s can create to-do items and assign them to themselves or another user. This makes tracking the progress of action points a breeze. Also, it means you are less likely to forget to do something.
This way you can always be developing your domains and making sure you’re on top of their progress. I’ve seen a few other websites that do something similar, but I haven’t found anything as robust. Another, really cool feature is that it has other add-on services such as reporting and invoicing. They have a whole app store filled with extras and it’s constantly being added to. And of course their are several Iphone apps that work with BasecampHQ and the other 37 Signals products.
